An Exuberantly Cobalt-Decorated Three Gallon Pennsylvania Stoneware Jar

Uniontown, Pennsylvania, 19th Century

with tooled neck and shoulder and two applied lug handles, the body decorated with two large and bright cobalt flowers and leaves emanating from a bold blue ground line, with Roman numeral capacity mark between.

rim also impressed with capacity mark. Cobalt line at neck and at handle bases.  

Height 13 inches.

Most of right handle is broken off and missing. Tight "Y"-shaped crack at base extending to under base: extends 5 inches horizontally and about 1 1/4 inch vertically on body, not including underside. Glaze pocks.
