An Exceptional Pennsylvnia Five Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar

Enoch Fowler, Beaver, Pennsylvania, Second Half 19th Century

of tall, semi-ovoid form with heavy everted rim, two applied lug handles, and tooled neck and body, impressed on the reverse side with capacity chop, and E. Fowler, Beaver PA., profusely decorated with a series of constricting lines framing a row of vining cobalt flowers, and freehand capacity mark.  

Height 15 3/4 inches.


Kiln marks near base on both sides, one large glaze drip, two areas on left where crock touched another vessel in the kiln. Chip to lower left front base.
