An Exceptional Pennsylvania Free-Hand Cobalt Decorated 4 Gallon Crock

Hamilton & Jones, Greensboro, Pennsylvania, Last Quarter 19th Century

a rare crock, entirely decorated by hand, with lavish cobalt decorations, filling the entire front of the body, with tooled neck and shoulder, and applied lug handles. 

painted Hamilton & Jones. Greensboro. Pa. in a central band with scribe mark below, with elaborate swirling floral motifs above and below, stripes, squiggles, and dots, with a 4 capacity mark.

Height 14 1/2 inches.

An examination of over 400 sales records of Hamilton & Jones crocks failed to find a single entirely decorated by hand, this being the sole example.

Condition:

Left lug with two large chips resulting in the loss of about one third of the handle. Two chips to left lug. Cobalt on "Greensboro"partially missing on "s", "b" and "o" apparently the result of a miss from the slip cup. Some browning on sides.
