An Exceedingly Rare Apollo, Pennsylvania Five Gallon Stoneware Crock

Thomas Johnston, Apollo, Pennsylvania, Third Quarter 19th Century

with a tooled collar and upper body, two applied lug handles and bright, even glaze, cobalt stencil-decorated with the capacity mark, From Thos Johnston Manufr Of Stoneware Apollo. Armstrong. Co. Pa. all over a stenciled cow, with an additional 5 capacity chop in dotted circle over left handle.

Height 15 3/4 inches.

From a previously unseen Pennsylvania maker, Apollo is a borough about 35 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The 1870 Federal Census lists Thomas Johnston, 37, living in Apollo as a manufacture of stoneware. He later appears in the 1880 census, still in Apollo as the manager of a brick yard. 


Multiple repairs to front. Two tiny pops. Stenciling is not crisp with "Armstrong" particularly indistinct. Chip to underside of left handle.
