An Eight Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Decoration

Likely Ohio, circa 1880

an exceedingly tall and narrow straight-sided churn, typical of the work of northeastern Ohio turners, with profusely tooled high rim, and two applied lug handles, the body with a free-hand cobalt 8, simple floral device, and 1880 above a single cobalt line, both handles with cobalt at base.

Height 23 1/2 inches.



Chip to one lug. Kiln pocks. The rim is wavy/uneven. 

The glaze of this churn is dark grey and exhibits underglaze "dripping", especially noticeable in one wide top-to-bottom "stripe" on the back side of the churn.
