[Americana - Medicine - Kentucky Imprints] Rare Medical Herbal/Midwifery Published in Frankfort, Kentucky in 1815; OCLC Shows only 1 (AAS)

Carter, Richard. VALUABLE VEGETABLE MEDICAL PRESCRIPTIONS, FOR THE CURE OF ALL NERVOUS AND PUTRID DISORDERS. Frankfort, (Ken.): Gerard & Berry - Printers to the Commonwealth, 1815. First Edition. 7 by 4 1/2 inches in original full calf binding with a gilt printed leather label to the spine; complete in 187 pages. Shaw & Shoemaker 34297. Kentucky Imprints #537. Ernie Wessen referred to this book in 1948 as " one of the earliest medical books published in the Midwest and a desirable rarity." There was a later version of the book published in Versailles, Kentucky in 1825 which included, according to Wessen, "atrocious poetry" accompanying each of the medical cases and cures described.

Binding shows a "chewed chunk" missing from the edge of the upper cover. Toning and foxing throughout and page edges chipped and with closed tears more prevalent toward the later pages as well as some loosening of the gatherings. Lacks two final blank leaves. In spite of condition faults textually complete and very scarce with OCLC reporting only the example at AAS. Worthy of some professional restoration.
