[Americana - Manuscript - Maritime] 1803 Clement Biddle Partially Printed Document Signed, Plus Early Shipping Documents

Lot of 5. Biddle, Clement (1740-1814). Revolutionary War Colonel. Partially printed DS signed by Biddle as witness and Notary Public. June 6, 1804. Testimony of Edward Jenkin that he had sailed as mate on the Schooner Hannah Lorette from Philadelphia bound for Pointe-Petre (Guadeloupe) about the 23rd of January, 1803 with William Whelan as Master. Whelan died in the latter port and Jenkin took command of the vessel and proceeded directly back to Philadelphia arriving in February 1803, without stopping at any other port. Biddle served during the Revolutionary War, fighting at Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. He was Commissary General at Valley Forge. Many generations of Biddles were prominent in Philadelphia society. After the war he served as Pennsylvania's first US Marshal. His primary roles seem to have been as a Notary and Broker.

Accompanied by four documents involving insurance for the cargo, two for the Brig Lydia, from Philadelphia to Cape Francois (Hispaniola/West Indies). For the merchants E. Dutilh & Wachsmuth, Oct. 1, 1792, cargo insured for 1,025 Pounds, and an additional policy for 200 pounds more. Each partially printed, 13 x 16 in.

The final two documents are for the Schooner Hannah Loretta, for Stephen Dutilh. One for $6000 in goods, Philadelphia to Cartagena (Colombia), Oct. 7, 1800 (16 x 20.5 in.), the other for goods insured for $4000, from Philadelphia to Guadaloup[e] (Lesser Antilles/West Indies), Nov. 30, 1802 (10 x 15.5 in.).
