Altered English Percussion "Chief's Grade" Trade Fusil

.66 caliber (carbine bore). 46" three-stage pinned octagon to round barrel. SN: NSN. Browned finish, brass furniture, faux tiger striped hardwood stock. Single shot percussion smooth bore trade gun. Unmarked commercial percussion lock is lightly engraved with scenes of fowl. Breech with pre-1813 Birmginghan proofs that replicate the look of London gunmaker's proofs with a raised "{Crown}/P" and "{Crown}/V" in depressed ovals, separated by a "{Crown}/BW" maker's mark, likely the mark of Birmingham gun maker Benjamin Willetts. Urn finial brass triggerguard with lightly engraved starburst, pinned buttplate tang with simple panoply of arms engraving, both typical of English "Chief's Grade" guns. Brass ramrod pipes with baluster turned rings, of better quality than the typical Northwest gun corrugated ramrod pipes. Lock may be a replacement from the period of alteration, barrel with percussion drum bolster. Extra screw with washer in triggerguard tang may have secured a rudimentary sling during the period of use. Includes an old wood ramrod that may be from the period of use as well. A well used, salty and very authentic trade gun with a nice look.

Condition:

Good. Metal deeply oxidized with a thick brown patina and scattered minor roughness and some light pitting. Markings clear at breech. Lock mechanically functional, bore fair, moderately oxidized, dark and pitted. Brass with a nice, rich and uncleaned patina. Wood worn with numerous cracks and some old repairs. Most of the stock pins are missing, replaced with wire or nails. Front lock screw missing, secured by wire. Cracks around both the lock mortise and counterpane secured and strengthened with wire. Forend with wood wear and loss around the pin holes and some cracks and chips. Otherwise with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
