Democrats in the Reconstruction Era opposed many of the Civil Rights reforms Republicans worked to establish including voting rights for African Americans. Brevet Brigadier General Benjamin Lefevre (1838-1922) unsuccessfully ran for Ohio Secretary of State in 1866, but was later elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving there from 1879 until 1898.
