[AFRICAN AMERICANA]. Postcard of the Negro Building at the Jamestown Exposition. 1907.

Postcard, color, captioned "Negro Building Jamestown Exposition, 1907." Description on verso notes: "The United States Government appropriated the sum of $100,000 for the negro building and exhibit and to facilitate and promote negro participation in the Exposition." Jamestown Amusement & Vending Co., Norfolk, VA. 1907.

The Jamestown Exposition celebrated the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. Although the Exposition overall lost money, the negro hall received nearly universal praise. It was designed and built by African Americans, and the exhibits emphasized the progress of African Americans. It was reportedly the only exhibit visited by President Roosevelt when he was at the fair. Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens also visited. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown_Exposition)
