[AFRICAN AMERICANA] -- [BUFFALO SOLDIERS]. Real photo postcard of Benedict Mosley (1889-1966), Troop M, 9th US Cavalry. N.p., n.d.

3 3/8 x 5 3/8 in. real photo postcard with illustrated vignettes (minor soiling, small tear to left edge). Signed on verso below vignettes "Kindness of your brother / Benedict Mosley. / Troop 'M' 9th US Cavy."

A real photo postcard featuring a portrait of Benedict Mosley in uniform with a medal pinned to his breast. A number of extant 9th Cavalry returns confirm that Mosley was enlisted in Company M of the 9th. His earliest found records are from April 13, 1908, at Camp McGrath, Philippine Islands when he was a private; returns from April 1911 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas indicating he had been promoted to corporal; an April 1914 record notes that he was by then a sergeant; a 7 May 1917 transport log notes that he was on board the Logan traveling to San Francisco. Then at the start of the United States' entrance to World War I, Mosley appears to have been transferred into the segregated 365th Infantry, part of the 92nd Infantry Division which adopted the "Buffalo Soldier" nickname and insignia. He is listed as a 1st lieutenant of Co. C of the 365th traveling to Brest, France on the Olympic, later returning to New York City in 1919. Though records are scarce, he may have continued to serve in the armed forces as a document lists his retirement at the rank of 1st lieutenant on 30 September 1939.
