Born in Louisiana, Thomas lived in New Orleans before his October 1850 marriage to his future partner's sister, Elizabeth J. Ball and his relocation to the city of Cincinnati. The partnership between Ball and Thomas produced unique photographs of some of the era's most important figures. After the dissolution of their partnership, Thomas partnered with Ball's younger brother, Thomas C. Ball, operating a studio with him until the younger Ball's death in 1875.
