A Rare Pennsylvania Three Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar

S. Cooper, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Last Quarter 19th Century

tall, semi-ovoid form with applied lug handles, tooled neck and shoulder, with free-hand cobalt decorations and capacity mark, neck with an elaborate impressed chop mark of a semi-circle composed of dashes surrounding S. Cooper No. 4 Diamond Pittsburgh PA.  

Height 13 3/4 inches.

A rare mark, not to be confused with the more commonly encountered forms manufactured by W.D. Cooper and Brothers who operated at 7 Diamond Street.  

Condition:

Front and side with several significant cracks, left lug handles with chips.  Still solid, and a rare Pittsburgh mark.
