A Pennsylvania Stoneware Mug with Cobalt Tulip

Pennsylvania, Second Half 19th Century

a finely turned straight-sided mug with "c" handle, the body with three inscribed lines and decorated with a tulip, handle with cobalt at top and bottom.

Height 4 3/4 inches.

This mug is similar to a number offered by Pook and Pook and Conestoga Auctions in Eastern Pennsylvania, and though none have been maker-marked, they are assumed to be the product of a Keystone State potter. Crocker Farm has attributed at least one to the pottery of D.P. Shenfelder, of Reading (see Crocker Farm, October 22, 2016, Lot 171).

Four very minor chips to foot and one to rim. Glaze is darkly oxidized.

Estimate: $400 - $600
