A Fine Anna Pottery Style "Temperance" Albany Slip Stoneware Jug by Brian Moore

American, 1991

incised date and initials on body.

Height 14 inches.

This jug is done in the style of the famous Anna Pottery jugs depicting the evils of alcohol. The surface of the jug is covered with writhing snakes, spiders, and frogs with various portions of the human body attempting to "escape." Moore, a ceramicist from Indianapolis, Indiana, has made about a dozen of these jugs in his 30 year career, and no longer works in this style. He made only one or two examples with an Albany style glaze. (Personal Communication, August 31, 2020).
