(Born 1936, England)

Stoneware; ht. 5.75 in.

John Maltby studied sculpture at Leicester and at Goldsmith's College, London before working with David Leach, at Bovey Tracey (1962-1964). In 1964 he started his own workshop in Devon. He was profoundly influenced by Leach's ethics and work philosophy but not his visual style. Eschewing Asian high-fire for earthenware and painting (which he had studied earlier) he created vibrantly decorated ceramics with some influence from Japanese potters and their painting styles. Maltby is widely represented in a number of public collections, including the V&A in London and others in Edinburgh, Aberystwyth, Belfast, Exeter, Leicester, and Faenza in Italy and Hamburg in Germany. Since1996, due to ill health, his production has been limited. Maltby was a favorite of Dorothy Miner. (See also lots 261-272 this sale.)
