3rd Type US Model 1875 Trapdoor Officer's Rifle

.45-70 caliber, 26" barrel, no S/N. Blued finish, color case hardened lock, triggerguard and breech block, checkered stock with detachable checkered pistol grip and engraved pewter forend cap. Lock engraved with simple foliate scrolls that surround the {Spread-Winged Eagle} and two-line US / SPRINGFIELD markings. Barrel with standard, larger sized V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks, along with another small P and small R inspection marks. Counterpane with crisp "SWP/1885" cartouche, clear {Circle}-P inspection in belly of stock behind the checkering. Top of breech block marked in three lines: "US / MODEL / 1873," with the deeply struck "3" appearing as an "8." Narrow receiver, low arch breech, with foliate engraving, additional simple engraving on barrel band, buttplate, breech block, triggerguard, hammer and breech block release. Two-click tumbler, grooved single-set trigger with checkered tip. Folding tang-mounted rear sight with small oval base and without calibrations, "R" marked 1879 pattern rifle rear sight, folding blade/globe front sight. Includes the original, late production brass tipped wooden cleaning rod with brass jag on opposite end. Only 477 officer's rifles were produced at Springfield circa 1875-1885 with only 100 of the "third type" M1877/79 pattern rifles produced. This is an exceptional example that would be an outstanding addition to any advanced collection of Trapdoor Springfields and is worthy of being a centerpiece in such a collection. An outstanding gun that would be nearly impossible to upgrade.

Condition:

Excellent. Retains nearly all of the blue on the barrel which has aged to a smooth plum brown, with some thinning and small flecks of scattered surface oxidation. Barrel band, buttplate and receiver retain most of their bright blue with some fading, thinning and loss, primarily from handling. Case hardened parts retain nearly all of their vibrant colors and are truly striking. All markings and engraving remain exceptionally crisp and sharp. Mechanically functional, fine, bright bore. Stock equally crisp with only some lightly scattered minor handling marks. A truly wonderful officer's model rifle anyone would be thrilled to own.
