A Fine and Rare Colt Model 1883 Gatling Gun Complete With U.S. Army Field Carriage and Limber Dated 1887

.45-70 caliber, of standard U.S. Army issue configuration, serial number 457, one of 20 delivered to the Army in 1887 and so dated on the casing. Inspected by David Frederick Clark, the same inspector of the Cavalry Colt Single Action Army revolvers. Serial number 457 is a remarkably complete and intact example of this most famous and iconic gun complete with original field carriage, limber, and a rare original Accles drum. Beautifully engraved markings MODEL 1883 No 457 CAL .45 and oval plate engraved GATLING GUN PATENTED with border engraving around spirit level and further decorative flourishes. It has been said that the engraved markings and scrolls are by Colt's chief master engraver, Cuno Helfricht. The color of the bronze is an attractive honey color as found on the frame of a good Henry or 1866 Winchester. This is a splendid 1883 Gatling and one of the best and most complete to be offered in recent years.

Condition of serial 457 is remarkable and is one of the better examples extant. The bronze casing has beautifully hand engraved markings in excellent condition. The carriage has been repainted in the original Army colors. The bolts are all original Gatling bolts properly DFC inspected. The Accles drum is an original. The barrels remain in remarkable condition with good bores and several barrels with brilliant rifling. The bronze is smooth and not pitted as are most Gatling's that saw military service. The action of serial 457 is smooth and dry fires perfectly. This is one of the very finest 1883 Gatling's offered for sale in many years and would be the centerpiece of any military or machine gun collection as it is the ancestor of all Class III weapons.
