A small number of Kutenai parfleches have been preserved, yet they comprise a highly recognizable style and unified body of works.  It is remarkable that such a small tribe should develop one of the most distinctive styles and retain it in spite of surrounding influences.... Kutenai parfleches are distinguished by their visual complexity.  The principle forms within compositions are freely and expressively drawn, in sharp contrast to the sense of finely detailed intricacy established by the minute brown/black triangles and lines integrated throughout the design.  Even these elements, however, assume differing progressions and point in various directions, contributing to an all-pervasive movement and energy (Torrence, Gaylord. The American Indian Parfleche: A Tradition of Abstract Painting. 1994: 190).
