American, 19th-early 20th century. A hand carved and painted cigar store Indian figure in basswood, having a feather headdress, red cloak, and a beaded medallion necklace, armed with a dagger and wooden club, set on a wooden box base labeled H.L. Davis & Sons Cigars, on forged metal wheels; ht. 84, wd. 22, dp. 16 in.
The shop where this figure was carved has not been identified. It was consigned from Southeastern Michigan.
Repainted, with an "oil receptacle" at top of head and plugs in the back of the figure. Base also repainted, but possibly original. Wood tested by Alden Identification Services, Chesapeake Beach, MD.
