Tiffany Studios Rowfant Club Bronze Candlestick

American, 1903. A bronze candlestick made for the Rowfant Club of Cleveland, OH, depicting a groundhog seated on an open book, marked Tiffany Studios / New York on underside. Designed by Ernest Thompson Seton (American, 1860-1946), impressed with his signature on the base, and also impressed J L Clark Modeller. Underside impressed OF ONE HUNDRED COPIES MADE THIS IS NO-99; ht. 8.25, wd. 5, dp. 4.5 in.

Founded in 1892, the Rowfant Club is Cleveland's premier bibliographic society celebrating the art of the book including paper making, bookbinding, and printing. With the Shakespearean motto of "Light Seeking Light Doth Light of Light Beguile," members meet annually on Groundhog Day (Candlemas) and each member receives a candlestick with their mascot, the groundhog. Members then use these sticks throughout the year to reserve their seats at dinner at their weekly meetings.
