Exceptional CDV of Lincoln Assassination Conspirator Lewis Powell by Gardner

Rare CDV of conspirator Lewis Thornton Powell, on titled mount detailing names by which the hulking would-be assassin was known “Payne, alias Wood, alias Hall.... Arrested as one of the Associates of Booth in the Conspiracy.” Taken by Alexander Gardner in 1865, and published by Philp & Solomons, Washington, DC. Both Gardner and the publishers credited on verso.

Lewis Powell (1844-1865), a Confederate from Florida, joined Booth in the attempt to overthrow the Federal Government. He was assigned the task of assassinating Secretary of State William Seward, who he only managed to severely wound. He was then captured at the boarding house of Mary Surratt later that evening and taken into custody. A great study of the brooding, hulking killer who had the intellect of a child.
