.38 caliber, 10" octagonal barrels, numbered 1 and 2 respectively. Blued finish with silver highlights, color casehardened locks, raised carved ebony stocks. A simply fabulous pair of highly embellished 19th century German percussion target pistols by S.T. Heym of Suhl, and marked inside the barrel channels of the stocks. Bottoms of barrels with Suhl touchmarks and ST H mark, top of barrels with a single London commercial Crown/V proof mark, indicating sale in England. Bores rifled with 6-grooves, and sighted with a fixed notch rear sight on the breeches and a fire-blued dovetailed blade at the muzzles. Barrels with raised silver and gold bands at the case hardened breeches, with engraved tangs numbered 1 and 2 respectively. Decorative inlays over the chambers, consisting of intertwined vines terminating in arrows, and decorative silver plaques on top of the flats that could be engraved with the owner's name, with an additional arrow further along the barrels near the muzzles and silver bands at the muzzles. Case hardened hooked breeches and case hardened locks with raised engraved flowing vine motifs. Case hardened butt caps with lanyard rings. Case hardened spur triggerguards, adjustable triggers. Ebony stocks with fluted grips and raised carved flowing foliate motifs overall. The matching pair are contained in a fitted mahogany veneered casing with dark green baize lining, complete with a full set of accessories. These include an ebony handled, ivory tipped loading rod, an ebony handled, brass tipped cleaning rod, and a pair of turned ebony containers for wads and percussion caps. Other accessories include an ebony handled turnscrew with two different screwdriver blades and a cone wrench attachment, an iron single cavity round-ball bullet mold, a wad cutter, a pewter oiler, an adjustable brass powder measure, and a copper bag-shaped powder flask. Two lidded compartments, one containing several lead balls and the other two additional percussion cones. All of the accessories are unmarked. A simply stunning matched pair of percussion target pistols that provide a fantastic exhibition of the gunmakers art.
Very fine throughout. Barrels retain nearly all of their blued finish, with the silver tarnished and dulling. The case colors remain mostly vivid with some minor dulling and fading. Bores are excellent, as are the lock mechanisms. Stocks remain extremely fine and crisp with sharp carving throughout. All accessories about fine, case very good to fine with some discoloration and fading of the lining, some light surface wear on the case and a couple of grain cracks in the veneer on the lid. A wonderful set, very difficult to improve upon for artistry or flamboyance.
