Overview

Cowan's Fine Books and Manuscripts: Timed Auction features a selection of rare and collectible editions, illustrated volumes, along with maps, manuscripts and autographs. An illuminated 15th century Breviary begins the offerings, followed by an early manuscript leaf from a Yemeni Torah. Illustrated Natural History volumes include Muscorum (leafy mosses), birds and fishes, and wild flowers. Other science volumes include a 1639 edition of Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum (Lot 34) and a number of early medical titles on alchemy, anatomy, nutrition, midwifery and more (Lots 35-40). Some illustrations occur on the (fore)edges (Lots 51-52). Even early erotic humor is represented (Lot 50). Manuscript material includes a collection of colonial-era receipts and notes. Autographs include J.Q. Adams, Richard Nixon, S.S. Van Dine (Willard Huntington Wright), Paul McCartney and Hugh Hefner. There are volumes of travel and exploration and maps to visualize these places and many others. Stories of Indian captivity, overland travels, railroad routes and Indian portfolios capture the drama of westward expansion and a group of brand books represents a kind of “settling in.” An eclectic assortment of subjects rounds out the offerings.

Absentee-bid
This platform operates using the "proxibid" method - you may place a high bid and the system will bid on your behalf up to that limit.

5-Minute Closing Rule
Starting at 12:00 PM (Noon) on the Final Date, all lots will close starting with lot #1. There will be a 1 minute period between each item until all items close.

Extended Bidding
Any bids placed within 5 minutes of the closing time will extend bidding by another 15 minutes. This rule will apply continuously until no bids are placed within the 5 minute period.

Email Notification
You will receive an email notification:
-each time you place a bid
-when you are outbid on any lot
-at the close of the auction if you are the high bidder

End of the Auction
