The Old Violin Chromolithograph after W. M. Harnett (1848-1892)

American. A chromolithograph by Donaldson Art Sign Co., a Cincinnati publisher; 36 x 26 in. (sheet size).

William Michael Harnett's trompe l'oeil masterpiece was exhibited at the 1886 Cincinnati Industrial Exhibition and was supposedly the inspiration for Cincinnati artist Charles Meurer who began his own career focusing on this technique after seeing the painting. Local printer Frank Tuchfarber was so impressed with the painting that he purchased it with the intent to produce chromolithograph copies. The chromolithographs were created using no fewer than seventeen stones. The Old Violin became Harnett's most famous work, and the chromolithographs produced either bear Tuchfarber's name, or as in this object, that of Donaldson Art Sign Company.

This is likely a printer's proof. It is not trimmed to the image & retains margins with registration crosses, color keys, and ink bleeds.

[Americana - Horology] American Clock Making by C. Jerome Important Manufacturing History with Details of the Barnum Partnership Disaster, etc.

Jerome, Chauncey. HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN CLOCK BUSINESS FOR THE PAST SIXTY YEARS AND LIFE OF CHAUNCEY JEROME, WRITTEN BY HIMSELF. BARNUM'S CONNECTION WITH THE YANKEE CLOCK BUSINESS. New Haven: F.C. Dayton, 1860. First Edition. 7 1/2 by 5 inches in the original purple cloth with gilt titling to the upper cover. 144 pages; litho portrait frontis. Long considered one of the better histories of early manufacturing in America.  “More valuable is the direct, opinionated, and vinegary 'History of the American Clock Business. . .', this work gives some picture of the spread of interchangeable parts manufacture to clock making; the other actors in that drama are less well presented in print.” --- Hindle, Technology in early America, p. 72.

From the book: "The manufacture of Clocks has become one of the most important branches of American industry. Its productions are of immense value and form an important article of export to foreign countries. It has grown from almost nothing to its present dimensions within the last thirty years, and is confined to one of the smallest States in the Union. Sixty years ago, a few men with clumsy tools supplied the demand; at the present time, with systematized labor and complicated machinery, it gives employment to thousands of men, occupying some of the largest factories of New England. Previous to the year 1838, most clock movements were made of wood; since that time they have been constructed of metal, which is not only better and more durable but even cheaper to manufacture."

American Literature, Melville's "Omoo," 1847 and Harry Edwards' "Eneas Africanus," Macon, Georgia, 1920

Melville, Herman. Omoo - A Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1847. Small 8vo, brown decorative cloth with gilt decorations on spine and gilt sailing vessel on front board, marbled endpapers, 389pp. This copy is missing the original title page and has a photocopy of title and copyright page inserted. It still has the original frontis map/chart and drawing on page 104. It has the xxiii page Publisher's Advertisement for the Revised Edition of Typee (Melville's first South Seas island adventure) and 8 pages of ads for other titles offered by Harper, mostly publications for schools. This appears to conform to the points of the first American edition, the preferred edition of collectors. From an historical perspective, this represents a very early description of life on a Pacific Island.

Edwards, Harry Stillwell. Eneas Africanus. Macon (GA): J.W. Burke Co., 1920, presumed first. 12mo, green suede-covered boards with gilt on front, 47pp. Written partially in dialect, not unlike Jim in Huckleberry Finn. The story of an ex-slave who remains loyal to his "massa," who travels around the south trying to find his way home while carrying the plantation silver, including a "wedding cup" with multi-generational history. The only places Eneas has been other than the plantation are Tommeyville (or Thomasville), Washington and Jefferson Counties, Macon, Sparta and Louisville. As he traveled around the South, he discovered just how many places bear the same names. It takes him many years to make his way back to his starting point, since he occasionally stops for a year or two to earn some money to continue his trip. This depicts the white Southern fantasy, a slave so devoted that he returns with all of the plantation wealth intact.
