Italian Carved and Polychromed Devotional Bas-Relief of Madonna and Child

Italian, 17th or 18th century. A Baroque carved bas-relief depicting a scene of Madonna with Child. The Child Christ, standing on the lower edge of the panel, is embraced by the Madonna, and both are in blue and red garb with golden haloes. The carving is applied to a painted wooden panel, which is housed in a frame with pediment at top, decorated with a painted dove motif, and columns decorated with foliate motifs on each side. The lower edge of the frame has relief coat of arms with fleur-de-lis motifs and red and white stripes; oah. 52, wd. 32.5, dp. 6.25 in.

This type of devotional bas-relief is reminiscent of Renaissance Florentine religious carvings, particularly of the work of Antonio Rossellino.
