Bookmark and Share

Auction: 2008, Historic Americana Auction, Dec 4 & 5

Price Realized: $0.00

Ninth Plate Ambrotype of Possible Southern Volunteer,

holding a Springfield-type percussion rifle and with odd insignia on kepi. Insignia lacks detail to determine actual design, but appears to be either an eagle perched on something with upraised wings or wreath with large knot or ribbon below. Possibly late 1850s state militia uniform (the neckwear appears to be 1850s). In the early days of the war, soldiers kept their state uniforms until the Federal and Confederate governments could issue standard gear, which led to confusion since some southern uniforms were blue and some northern ones grey. Housed in generic floral composition case.

Solar ring on plate, but overall VG+. Mat between ambro plate and cover glass, with foil wrapper holding them together.

(EST $300-$400)
