Cheyenne prisoners at Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Florida, in the summer of 1875. Standing against the doors are, from the left: White Man, Medicine Water, Making Medicine, and White Bear. Making Medicine, with the dark bandolier across his chest, was an officer of the Bowstring Society, and the leader of a tracking party which tried to recover more than 1,000 horses stolen from Little Robe's village by white ruffians in 1874. Unable to catch the thieves, the Cheyennes replaced their stock by taking a like number from ranchers trespassing on Cheyenne lands (see Cowdrey 1999: 32-33).
