Beautifully detailed deep engraved eagle in flight above UNION, at top, with Miss Liberty with Liberty Cap on pike on left side and Lady Justice, blindfolded with scales on right, crossed U.S. flags flanking U.S. shield at bottom, 1.5" x 2.4" high, tested 14k gold, 0.585 ozt.

One spare epaulet also in poor condition. Two bullion coil tassels for fore and aft section of a chapeau. Plus one pair of Indian Wars Lieutenant's shoulder boards and one Indian War Captain's shoulder board.

The Rhode Island First Light Infantry was a state militia that was formed in 1818. They were called to state service in April 1842 and participated in the Dorr Rebellion. They were again called to service in the Civil War when they became Companies C and D of the 1st Rhode Island Infantry Regiment.

U.S. Navy Document Japanned Tin box inscribed to Andrew Bryson U.S. Navy. Lot includes a large group of photocopy documents and photographs, detailing his service record.

Andrew Bryson was born in 1822. He was appointed from New York, December 21st, 1837; attached to Sloop Ontario, West India Squadron, 1838-42; Naval School, Philadelphia 1842-43; promoted to Passed Midshipman, June 29th, 1843, sloop Decatur, Coast of Africa, 1843-45; Steamer Michigan, on the lakes,1845-49; store ship Erie, 1850-51; commissioned as Lieutenant, August 30th, 1851; brig Bainbridge, Coast of Africa, 1851-55; receiving-ship, Boston, 1853-55; sloop Saratoga, Home Squadron, 1856-58; sloop Preble, Brazil Squadron, 1858-59; Navy Yard, New York, 1861 commissioned as Commander, July 16th, 1862; commanding steamer Chippewa, special service, 1862-63; commanding iron-clad Lehigh, S.A.B. Squadron, 1863; at the reduction of Fort Macon, and in all principal actions in which the iron-clads were engaged off Charleston, from September 22d, 1863, to April 5th, 1864; wounded slightly by fragment of shell off Charleston; commanding the iron-clad Essex, Mississippi Squadron, 1864-65: commissioned as Captain, July 25th, 1866; commanding steamer Michigan, on the lakes, 1866-69; Commanding receiving-ship, Boston 1869; Commissioned as Commodore, February 14th, 1873 commissioned Rear Admiral, March 25th 1880; on Retired List January 30th, 1883; Died, February 7th, 1892.

Ba., over gold silk ribbon with gold filled and enameled shield with anchor on blue field with ribbon banner above with Hope, attached to oval sunburst gold filled medallion with crossed sabers on blue field, 3.25" long.

fine silver and enameled jeweler-made shield-shaped pinback medal with engraved and enameled ribbon banner at top with 7th R.I. Vol., over anchor with smaller banner with Hope in blue, over crossed guidons and rifles, 1.5" x 1.7".

The R.I. 7th Vol. Infantry saw its first action at Fredericksburg with heavy casualties. After this it was transferred to the Western theater under Grant and was active at the siege of Vicksburg and many smaller skirmishes in pursuit of Johnson's retreating army. The Regiment was again transferred to the Army of the Potomac and took part in the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Bethesda Church, and the siege of Petersburg.

62" x 84", in wool with unusual two-piece canton that is vertically longer than horizontal distance (34.5" x 27.5"), with wreath pattern canton of 35 hand-sewn cotton stars, four of which are in corners of canton, reverse with matching hand-sewn cotton stars. Machine sewn canvas hoist with seven hand-sewn grommets. This flag has nine linen loops sewn along the top margin for displaying on wall.

CIVIL WAR R.I. 2ND/3RD/7TH CAV. REUNION GUIDON WITH DOCUMENTS,

lot of 8, includes a 29" x 42.5" guidon with painted crossed cavalry sabers in gold, red and blue with 2d./3d./7th in gold with red outlining, on golden yellow silk ground with matching fringe and hoist in braided metallic edging. Lot includes a 2.25" x 7" gold silk printed ribbon for the above units reading 2d, 3d and 7th Squadron Veteran Cavalry Association Annual Reunion Rocky Point Tuesday, August 4th 1896. Also a GAR corps badge-type two-part metal, in Maltese cross-form with enameled 2/3/7, surrounding central crossed sabers with R.I. above and Cavalry/Association below, with blank bar form pinback, 1.75" long, plus 5 post-war state militia documents for 2nd Lt. Robert Pollard, 3rd R.I. Cavalry, and an illustrated Civil War escutcheon for the 3rd R.I. Cavalry, 18" x 22".

The 7th R.I. Cavalry, a 3-month unit, was part of the Army of the Potomac, narrowly escaped the Colonel Miles disaster at Harpers Ferry. The R.I. 2nd dragoons battalion of cavalry was also a three-month unit. The R.I. 3rd Cavalry was a 3-year enlistment, assigned to the Dept. of the Gulf, under General Banks. These units saw considerable action in the West, including the Red River expedition.
