3/4-length image of Whiteside in frock coat with backmark of W.M. Knight, Buffalo, N.Y. with 2-cent blue U.S. Internal Rev./Playing Card stamp with Washington bust, inscribed in period ink on reverse J.C. Whiteside/Wyoming N.Y./Capt. 94th N.Y.. Lot includes photocopies of his POW records and other military documents pertaining to his service.

John C. Whiteside was commissioned into Co. A, 105th N.Y. Infantry and transferred to Co. H, 94th N.Y. Infantry, was captured during the battle of Gettysburg and paroled on April 18, 1865. The 94th was heavily engaged on July 1 at Gettysburg sustaining heavy casualties and losses from prisoners, including the commanding officer, Col. Root, who was wounded and had to be abandoned when the unit was forced back by superior CSA forces. Captain Whiteside was likely captured during this retreat. Lot includes a brief printed unit history.
