5/26/2011 - ONLINE Books, Maps & Autographs
Fremont, John Charles; "The Pathfinder" (1813-1890). Western explorer, military commander, and one of California's first two senators, famous for his principled provocation and intractability. ALS, 1p, 7.75" x 9", dated Thursday evening, January[?] 1857, addressed to Isaac Sherman, Esq. at New York Hotel, reading in full:
My dear Sir

This will be handed to you by an old and warm friend of mine, Mr. R.F. Livingston, who was besides a very active friend of mine in the late Campaign. He is desirous of obtaining a Harbor Master appointment, and I should be much gratified to contribute to his Success.

As you are going to Albany I thought the better way would be to make you acquainted with him and his object, and ask your good offices with the Governor.

Mr. Livingston and I were associated whilst I was a Civil Engineer & anything you can do to aid him will be a personal favor to me.

yours truly,
J.C. Fremont
