no backmark, ink signed on verso Yours Truly/Lewis Reed/1st Lieut. 54th Mass Vol. Reed joined the 12th Massachusetts at first call in April 1861 as corporal of Company G. As sergeant he was wounded at Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862, and later took a commission in the black 54th Massachusetts (of Glory fame) in July 1863. Reed served for the duration in the 54th making captain in June 1865 before mustering out in August. He lived in Rockland, Mass., until 1925.
