by J.W. Black, Boston, with Lt H. Ropes-1862/Killed at Gettysburg inked on verso. Henry Ropes enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company K., 20th Mass. in November 1861. Promoted 1st Lieutenant Ropes, was "wounded by a shell in the body and killed" during Pickett's Charge on July 3. The Gettysburg report of the 20th Mass. written by Captain H. L. Abbott speaks of Ropes' death as "a heavy blow" and heaps praises on the young officer who was "conspicuous for coolness." With copy of Ropes' National Archive records.
